During my internship, I worked within my university’s athletic department, gaining firsthand experience in operations, budgeting, and program development. This experience was instrumental in shaping the vision for V.I.S.I.O.N: Beyond the Field.
Understanding collegiate athletics at the HBCU level
The athletic department supports multiple sports programs and operates within the structure of collegiate athletics at the HBCU level. Leadership includes the athletic director, compliance staff, coaches, and administrative personnel who work together to support student-athlete success.
Program growth and resource management
In recent years, there has been a focus on program growth, resource management, and expanding opportunities, including emerging sports like women’s flag football. From my perspective, the department plays an important role in providing opportunities while navigating financial limitations common at the HBCU level.
